BNSF SIGNALS NEW APPROACH TO SAFETY
(6-9-00)

At the UTU Regional Meeting in Reno, Nevada on June 12, 2000, General Chairman Kerley will update the Local Chairmen in attendance on the results of a June 2, 2000, meeting with the Carrier, during which the Carrier signaled a major shift in its approach to safety. For starters, the Carrier has indicated that it would enter into negotiations for an Agreement governing UTU participation, addressing both pay issues and administrative rules for the actual operation of the safety committees. Additionally, the Carrier has recognized the need for a "grass roots" approach to safety, enabling employees to identify potential safety hazards without risk of discipline, and allowing UTU representatives to fully participate in developing training programs and other strategies to address safety concerns. The General Chairman's office welcomes input from the Local Chairmen and the membership as we begin negotiations on this important matter. Further updates will be posted here.
